20 gauge would be good. The original wire was mostly solid in the 1939-42 sets, and was 22 or 24 gauge, so using 20 gauge gives an extra measure of safety.

Radio Daze sells it, as do other vendors. You can get it in different colors, too, which enables you to duplicate the original color schemes if you wish.

I normally use heat shrink tubing slipped over the old wire after I remove the rubber insulation, but on my 41-616 I replaced most of the wires with the wire from Radio Daze, and was very pleased with it.
