Mike - Thanks. Yes, I am going to attempt to recone the original speaker. I bought another Philco 10 inch speaker some time ago and was just going to use it to replace the original speaker, but once the speaker arrived I noticed that the field coil was physically much smaller than that of the original and I don't think it could handle the current long-term. So I am going to attempt to remove that cone from the good speaker and use that cone to replace the destroyed cone of the original speaker.

I'll post a picture of the original speaker later.

Some pics on removing that good cone and using it to re-cone the original would be interesting to see!

Here's the speaker:

and a comparison between it and the 41-788 speaker:

And here is how the entire set looks right now:

I'll start a thread on this set in Philco Cabinet Restoration to show what is wrong with the cabinet. <---Edit: Here's the link:

I'll see what I can do. Sometimes I get carried away with what I am doing and forget to take pictures as I go along...but I'll try to remember to do this.

No worries...I've done the same!  Meant to photo a project and find its almost done before I remember I wanted to do that.

I think that I would do one of three things: The first would be to get a new cone and recone the original speaker since 10'' cones are usually easier to find, salvaging a 60+ year old speaker cone often does not end well so I would only do that as a last resort. The second thing I would try is see if the field coils could be swapped between speakers, unless it is welded in place the pole piece can be pressed out of the rear bracket, the coils removed, exchanged, and the pole piece pressed back in. The third option may be to add a smaller choke or resistor in series with the field coil of the second speaker and use it that way.
