Speaker and tubes for a Knight radio - OldRestorer - 02-14-2015

I received a wonderful SG-8 Knight radio from Sam last year and have finally gotten it out.
I would love to get a speaker for it but cant find anything online on what speaker to use.

any ideas??

Here is a pic since none exist online:

Somehow I feel that one of them AK speakers will work. Or wait 'till Kutztown, there is always this guy there, forgot his name, he sells speakers and he wrote a great book about them.

Or a fairly common RCA 100A, Peerless or almost any number of speakers from the late 20's.

The gentleman Mike mentions is Buford Chidester who specializes in reproduction speaker cones from about 1925 - 28, and his book is called Classic Cones:

He and his wife are very nice and always have a booth at Kutztown just down the aisle from us where they also sell their book.

Yes, I was trying to remember name...Buford, yes. We had a great chat, Tom was there too. I should buy the book.

I've got one also. I think it uses P/P 45's in the output stage. You will need to a real speaker not one that is make for a battery set. What I was going to do is grab a RCA 100? The big metal drum speaker gut it and mount a PM speaker with an output transformer. Don't remember if it needs a field coil/choke.

Terry!

Where ya been buddy?

If you wanna gut me a speaker thats cool Icon_mrgreen

I think I should find something that I can use without all the work and knowledge needed to change out a speaker.

Ok, any more ideas of what speaker would look good and play with this radio?

Also, anyone know what brand tubes it used?

Sorry I missed your post about speaker. Here is a pic of the Radiola 100 spkr.

Typically they go for pretty cheap $10-20. Or you could use a Philco G or H
spkr. It has the FC and output transformer all ready on it. If you would like I
could make you up spkr, output trans, and choke to be fitted into the 100 cabinet
Here's an ad for your set from 1930:
http://www.alliedcatalogs.com/html/1930/h006.html
And the toobs you are looking for are 3 #224 or 24A's, 2#227 or 27''s, 2#245
or 45's, and 1#280 or 80 toob.
How's the dial /tuning knob work? Best I remember the dial is mounted on a
pot metal drum that can be deformed. Mine was very hard to turn and the
cables where broken.

That is a GREAT AD!

I'm gonna frame that and put it above the radio!

I want that speaker from the AD and those sexy legs.. Icon_wink

Cant find the speaker cabinet online though.

I know the tube lineup but what brand was used in these knight radios? Cunningham?

Anyone got a few 245 tubes for me Icon_lol

I have a few 45 tubes but want the original globe tubes..

I found out the hard way last night about the tuning drum. BOTH strings snapped and now I have to re-string them. UGH

Oiled the heck out of it but it is still tight.

Thanks Terry
