RE: Midwest Radio K-18 - Arran - 04-04-2016

Midwest was really scraping the surplus parts bins when they built that thing, look at that bundle of electrolytic caps twisted and bundled together, that is unless it was a crude repair but they are Solar brand just like most of the paper caps one can see. But even if they were not original this chassis obviously had the original filter caps mounted underneath rather then in cans above the chassis. Then we have those marvelous "dogbone" style resistors with the B.E.D code, it's pretty obvious that they were building their sets with surplus parts, the IF cans look a bit old fashioned as well. What surprises me is that they used molded Bakelite tube sockets, which were more then twice the price of the wafer ones, which is always a good thing on a radio you have to restore.

Arran

Got into the radio last night and yes that is a bundle of caps put in by some hack. He attached it to the original cap in the can, maybe it worked or maybe it didn't . Cleaned up the chassis and cleaned and tested the tubes, all but one tested good. Also tested the power and output transformers , looking good. New pictures to follow.

OKay,,,how do you GET the Chassis Clean like that,,,,,?????  Topside only???

RE: Midwest Radio K-18 - Ronin61 - 04-05-2016

This was a very dirty chassis but it was just dirt and dust. A soft brush and a shop vac in blow mode to remove most of the dirt. Took it inside and used a vacumn and a brush, then removed all the tubes and cleaned them.

RE: Midwest Radio K-18 - KCMike - 04-05-2016

Its always nice to see a chassis with little or no rust. HATE dealing with rust!!.
That should be a fun restoration project Ron.

RE: Midwest Radio K-18 - Ronin61 - 04-28-2016

Spent a little time cleaning the cabinet with gojo and it looks good, i think i'll just clean and use some Howards. This cabinet will need new grill clothe. The chassis is almost finished and is playing very well {BUT} there is no alignment procedure available so we're going to wing it

Spectak-Cooler!

Love it.

RE: Midwest Radio K-18 - Ronin61 - 05-03-2016

This one is almost done, just need to clean the cabinet a little more and put in new grill cloth. I'm substituting a Garrard RC 88 turntable for the original one until i can determine whether the table is any good. the combination really works well and sounds amazing.

RE: Midwest Radio K-18 - Ronin61 - 05-13-2016

This radio needs alignment, but i have no alignment instructions. I've been instructed to connect my signal generator to the mixer tube which is the 6sa7 on pin eight. The if is 456. where do i connect the ground too. Here is the drawing for this model and any suggestions i will try.

The i.f. cans on the top of the will present a problem since i don't know what is what.
