TOP 20 of the best US radios 1920-35 and 1936-50 - RadioSvit - 04-18-2020

Friends and colleagues, I am very interested in one question - which 20 models of radio receivers in the USA can be considered the most advanced? Who has any preferences? Your opinion about the TOP 20 of the best radio receivers before 1936 and from 1936 to 1950 is interesting. I have my own opinion, but I am very interested in how objective Icon_mrgreen it is and whether it coincides with yours. Icon_wink
I would be very grateful for the objective assessment and any help. Icon_wave

Maybe let the readers know what the other parameters are ?? There are some very good general coverage radios that would normally be considered commercial. National NC240, RCA AR88D, Hammerlund HQ145, etc,,etc.

Are you including those types or just homeowner types ?

Radio stations for radio amateurs and military do not interest me. I'm only interested in domestic radio consoles and desktop radio stations. Of all the Phlco models, I consider the best models to be 14 LZX, 16 B, 16 CPX, 16 RX (up to 36 years) and 37-116 de Luxe, 37-690 and 38-690. Your opinion ? And also regarding receivers of other companies. ..

My favourite :  General Electric X371 (CX371 in Canada).  A consumer receiver, bandspread tuning and turret style bandswitch.

Hmm. And how many radio tubes, how many bands and what is the maximum frequency?

I like the 37 and 38-116. Good sounding radios and good sensitivity. Can't wait to pick up my 38-690 once the travel ban is lifted. I'll visit my kid in the Boston area too.

What I was thinking....is there a voting engine here, so we could suggest some models and then we vote?
I guess it is a question to the admins.

Yes.

You have to start a new thread by using the Post Thread button on the index page of the subforum to which you want to start your thread.

If you want to include Philcos in this voting, I suggest posting the thread in Old Ron's Bar & Grill. Or here - Other Radios (Non-Philco) - will also suffice.

Fill out your post as you normally would, but pay attention to the Poll: section at the bottom. Click the checkbox to the left of I want to post a poll. Set the number of radios you wish to vote on to a number between 2 and 10. (Sorry, the software which powers the Phorum limits you to no more than 10 choices.)

Then click the Post Thread button (not shown in this example, but it is below everything).

Before you see your new thread, another box appears - Post New Poll.

In the Question box, give a name to your poll.

In the Number of Options box, select a number between 2 and 10 (remember, you are limited to 10 choices). Then click the Update Options button.

In Poll Options, type in the name of each radio in each of the boxes.

I suggest you do not click either of the boxes under Options but that is entirely up to you.

Finally, Poll Timeout - This will allow you to set the number of days the poll will be active. If you set it to 0, the poll will never end so I suggest you set it to some number. For a one week poll, input 7. For a two week poll, input 14.

When you are satisfied, click the Post New Poll button.

That's it. Sit back and let folks participate in your poll.

I don't really qualify to vote: my exposure to both radios and the culture are limited compared to even people my age who grew up in US/Canada.
From those I dealt with, 38-690 Philco (I count both 37 and 38 690 models here ) is the best.
However from price/perfirmance standpoint I would say 37-116, as it has all the features of the older bros, same speaker and the midrange amp, and before the counterphasing booboo in 38-690 was figured, the teeeters didn't do much, and even then 1uF crossover cap made them so anemic they could barely be heard. So the sound wasn't drastically better in 690s.
But the bandspread, AFC and magnetic tuning, the "teledial", all was there.

Thanks, Ron. It seems to me that this is not quite right, because I am trying to identify the 20 best receivers in the United States, not one of the best. I think that among these 20 there will be such models as Zenith Stratosphere, Scott Philharmonic and Scott Phantom, Mac Mardo Masterprice 7(thanks Russell), Crosley WLW, RCA D 22, RCA 381, Phlko 37-690, Phlko 38-690? Phlko 37-116 de Luxe ... What other models do you think should be added to this list?
