dial string slips , how can i cure problem on my 42-390 radio other times it is ok hwhite19@juno.com hwhite

Try turning the tuner/cap by hand.
If it's difficult or not smooth I always lightly oil the shaft to make it smooth and easy.
This keeps most properly strung and tensioned from slipping.
