Unique Philco cathedral speaker - ipwizard - 04-22-2022

I was at the preview for the Estes auction today and came across this Philco speaker that I haven't seen before. It is in a cathedral cabinet has a single knob on the front under the speaker. No labels on the inside only the unique-looking speaker. Does anyone have any information about this?

Thanks.

Interesting. Does anyone know what these would have been attached to?

I found this on Radiolaguy.com

Looks like the one at the auction is missing the wiring and cover over the switch.

Yes, Keith -

Philco made and sold that in 1932. It is a Model R-3 extension speaker, made to use with your Philco radio in a separate room or as an extra speaker in the same room as the radio. It had its own volume control. (At least I think it was a volume control. I used to own one several years ago, but don't really remember much about it now.) And, yes, it originally had a very long cord. The only other part inside is a permanent magnet speaker. Small but heavy because of the early PM speaker used.

Very interesting. I see there is a transformer in the case. Would that be an output transformer?

Great... Something else I'm interested in at the auction. lol

Probably. It's been a long time since I had mine so I really don't remember.
