My Philco 41-280 Restoration is complete.. well, mostly! - RFP - 12-15-2011

Yesterday, I received the restored chassis back from Texas Vintage Audio in San Angelo, Texas. I am delighted by the work done by Randal Walls; he transformed my rusty, filthy, butchered-up 41-280 chassis into a nice looking, and great operating, piece of vintage electronics. Thanks to Mr. Walls for a professional and remarkably thorough job!

I made a good effort at making my own call letter 'tabs,' but frankly they are not that great... I may go get a set off of eBay when some turn up. Also, I'm missing four of the brass oval head screws that hold on the eschutcheon. Other than that, I'm done.

Restoring this old cabinet was great fun, and now I can relive those wondferful memories of yesteryear when I sat in front of this exact same model Philco for countless hours! Life was good... still is!

Thanks for all the nice words everyone! This is a great example of "teamwork" done by the owner that knows how to do a excellent job restoring their Cabinet while the chassis is in the shop for full electronics restoration! Thanks for posting your pics here RFP. There is another thread here somewhere showing the chassis before restoration. It was a basket case that needed lots of TLC. The chassis is now clean/ repainted and I was impressed how well it looks re-installed after I returned it and seeing the photos here today. The electronics restoration included all new point-to-point wiring under chassis ( including all I.F. cans), all new capacitors, out of spec resistors replaced, new tone control with new on/off switch, (original was defective). Added new field coil resistors ( parallel for approx 1200 ohms @ 20 watts rating combined)on top of chassis inside a ventilated metal cover for protection. The original speaker was defective so I set it up to use a modern p.m. type replacement. Also added a fuse and fuseholder on rear of chassis. It still had the original tubes, but they were tired. I added a new set of tubes and really improved the audio, & greatly improved the reception & sensitivity once aligned. Great job on restoring your cabinet RFP! Another vintage Philco saved!

Superb. The bar has been set far above once again.

Like WOW!!! Icon_eek

Beautiful! Cabinet and chassis look brand new. I agree, as Codefox1 indicated the bar has been set so high I can't see it. Breathtaking!
