Model 45 Dial Question - Jamie - 10-11-2013

Today, I replaced the caps and resistors in my 45. I decided to fire it up and see if it went Puhpow! 8) ... well it didn't... After a minor alignment, it sounds great. I've still got a lot of work to do, but it plays nicely.

I want to clean the dial and I have a couple of questions.

1. Are these dials known to be brittle? If I remove it, is there a risk of it breaking into pieces?

2. From eyeballing it, it looks like the writing is on the front? Is this correct? I've had good luck using mineral spirits to clean Philco dials without ink loss, but I am always wary.

Thanks in advance..

The printing is usually on the back of the dial. The front has a matte finish so that you can write on it with a pencil to add station call letters, etc. At least this is true of the model 89 dial which looks very similar to what you have.

Why would you want to remove the plastic dial to clean it? It looks very presentable as is and I would certainly be wary of trying to remove it as I believe it is riveted to the metal pulley assy.

Hi All;
PuhPow, well I am glad it didn't go Pow.. I have not gotten arround to cleaning mine, but, I would not use anything with any kind of Liquid.. Just a dry cotton ball or dry Q-tip.. Otherwise I might not like the results.. And I don't know of any reproductions.. I am Glad You got it to play..
THANK YOU Marty

It's pretty funky in real life. Sounds like I oughta leave it alone, so I guess I will. Maybe take a little brush to it..

I wouldn't touch it!!! Perhaps a blast of air to dislodge any dust bunnies, but nothing more. It adds a touch of character to the set if it looks "period mature". Clean the bulb behind it though, that may help a little. Take care, Gary
