Philco 42-400 With Add On Fm Adapter - Gene Pederson - 06-30-2014

today I was asked to look at an old radio the Elk's Lodge here in town had that come out of their rental property. Initially I thought it was a repro since they said it was AM/FM. But then he said it had tubes, so I had to go look.

Turns out it is a Philco 42-400 that one of the local radio shops installed an add on FM unit to in 1951. The date was written in pencil on the chassis. The tube adapter was installed on one of the 6F6G tube sockets and grounded onto the chassis. The shielded cable was plugged into the chassis. I am assuming it must have worked, but have never heard of this type of setup before.

This could be great as I have a 42-400 with a cabinet that is in pretty nice shape. This one was in a damp area and has a lot of delamination as well as some missing veneer and glue joints coming apart.

Looks like the Hallicrafters FM converter to convert the pre-war FM band to the modern FM band.

I could use that one when I fix my Spinet.

Wow, that was quick! Thanks for posting the pics of the unit. I learned something new today. Would never have thought about Hallicrafters. I have seen the Pilotuner and the Meissner (I have one of those).

I think I will try to get it into my 42-400, without punching a hole in the cabinet. I'll just have the knob facing out the back of the set.

NEATO!
