Coil Rewinding by Ron Ramirez
Coil Rewinding Service
The coils used in the earlier Philco sets are notorious for going bad. This occurs for two reasons:
- The radio may have been stored in a damp location for many years, causing corrosion to occur in the very fine wire used to wind the primary of the coils; and
- The breakdown of the celluloid strip which acted as an insulator between the primary and secondary windings, which releases nitric acid and corrodes the wires.

I am able to repair those old Philco coils made between 1928 and 1935. Look at this example of a bad coil in the photo at left, compared with how it looks at right after I rewind it.
This old Philco coil shows the classic symptoms of being bad: green areas at the top and bottom of the primary winding. The green indicates corrosion of the wire.
Here you can see how the same coil looks after I rewind it. The coil has a brand-new primary and secondary, and should be good for many, many years.
The vast majority of the older Philco coils have the primary winding wound over the lower end of the secondary, with an insulating strip of celluloid between the two windings. I remove the corroded primary winding and the celluloid strip, install new insulation and rewind the primary.
If there is any corrosion showing on the secondary winding, I rewind the secondary also. Otherwise I do not rewind the secondary as they are almost always still in good shape.
I have provided this service for many years, to many satisfied customers.
Price: $25 per coil, postpaid
(check/money order payable to Ronald A. Ramirez, or use PayPal)
Yes, I pay the return postage!
Please note: I only rewind Philco coils made between 1928 and 1935; 1936 models 38, 60, 84 and 89; and 1937 model 37-84. I do not rewind coils from newer Philco models.
To have your coils rewound, just contact me and let me know you have a coil (or more than one coil) needing to be rewound. I will give you my shipping address at that time. I look forward to serving your coil rewinding needs.
Please do not send a coil without contacting me first! Thanks very much.
