Mike,

To do that you'd have to downgrade your radio intelligence and become the village idiot. But then you can attend the annual Village Idiot's Convention, post the videos and get millions of viewers.

Rod

Isn't it what today is called "real happinness?"

I grew up in a village, so I got at least half the required qualifications. Icon_lol

Mike;
I think that because the video is a short, recorded via a cellphone, that a lot of the views are just from random people scrolling from one video to the next. However let's not conflate this with TikTok, or the Twitch streamers, where tankies become millionaires by pedaling Marxism to teenagers.
Regards
Arran

Yeah, them tankies.

When I was living here for the 3rd year, a friend of mine was a professor at the Delaware UNiversity, in Newark DE.
I came to visit, and he took me around the campus.
There was a stand with Che Guevara's portrait, and Trotskists (of all people; they are also communists after all) were giving out brochures.

This friend of mine came up to them and told them that he had an unused one-way ticket to the USSR (which had just collapsed, so the ticket would be to post-communist Russia) and he would gladly gift it to them (his greencard was in works at that point).
Somehow they declined...

Hello Arran,
I will look at it and post the answer !!

Hi Mike,

Yeah, use 45V when using either 201 or 201A as a grid leak detector.  Same with WD11s, 30s, 199s, 27s, etc.  The only tube that uses 22.5V when used as a detector that I know of is the 00 (UX200) and the rare 200A.

Therefore, I don't know why ARBE shows 22V for all those sets when they state that the connections are for sets where all tubes are 201s.  Both the 00 and 00A became unpopular by 1930 or so; pages for the 00 and 00A were dropped from the RCA Receiving Tube manual Version RC-10 published in 1932, while the 01A (UX201A) still received a full page.  I don't know when they stopped making 00As, I have never seen an ST version.

Congrats Mike!!!

Couple of thoughts. Wonder if that roughly 400Hz hum is feedback? My Radiola 16 has the detector tube on a shock mount A lot of times one sees the Model E speaker sitting right next to or on top of the radio cabinet. Consider puttng the pord or the speaker on foam to see if that helps.

RE the distortion, I wonder of it is being overdriven. Pretty loud for 01As which put out somewhere about 10 mW when used as the output tube. You can try a 112 but I think that it would be helpful to bring out the return in the interstage trans secondary so you can provide the correct bias. I remember trying a 112 at 90V with no bias and it sounded horrible. Somewhere I made a table in a previous thread as to the relative output wattage at various voltage and various bias for 01A, 112 and 71A. At 90V B+ and -4.5V C-, a 112 puts out 30 mW. at 135V and -9V, the 112 puts out 370 mW. However, you want to have a separate B+ for the 2 RF amps. This is not hard to do. Just disconnect the B+ between the board and the island, feed 135V at the Island's Amp B+, move the B+ on the A / B cable to 67.5V, disconnect the secondaries of both audio xformers form ground in the island and bring out a common for them to -9V on the Arbe, connect C+ to B- and you're in. Only other puzzlement is that the RCA receiving Tube Manual calls for a load resistance of 8700 Ohms but these speakers or horns are only about 1K to 2K Ohms. No transformer, RC or LC coupling is specified. On my Radiola 16 the specified output is a 112, the 112 and the 01A 1`st Audio have a B+ of 135V and C- of -(V. The speaker is directly between B+ and the 112 Plate. The RCA 100A speaker is similar in function to your Model E.

Thing is, I do not intend to modify the schematic.
However, decoupling capacitors do wonderful things if one were to try to do it.

I do not want to make this radio to function any better than it was intended to.
So, I will try to eliminate the microphonics and improve the reception (speaking of which, I still do not have a decent antenna, so I will stretch a longish piece of wire).

Globe tubes are sexy.....sometimes it is the look, unique, cool, whatever you want to say. I have a few 6 tube RCA sets 4 black metal tubes and a glass rectifier and output. How uncool is a say a generic looking black metal 12SQ7? They work just fine and last a long time and don't cost too much. So who in their right mind would want that tube? Paul

Hello guys,
Well, I checked my AK and it’s a Model 85, and it’s an AC set.

Sincerely Richard

I thought of an antenna and then I realized I totally forgot about the tuned loop antenn I bought a few years ago on amazon.
Ao I connected it.
No longer do I have to hold my left hand index finger on top of the Antenna terminal.

And yes, the signal is too much; I have to de-tune the circuits a bit or it becomes garbled.

Mo Town on Ron's AK, old uncle Ron smiling at you Mike. Paul

RE: Starting on Ron's AK10-A - morzh - 04-10-2026

Yeah. When I played that, I winked at him. I think he is.

RE: Starting on Ron's AK10-A - MrFixr55 - 04-10-2026

By Jove, I think he's got it!!

Did moving the speaker get rid of that high pitched tone?

Congrats on a GREAT restoration Mike!!

RE: Starting on Ron's AK10-A - morzh - 04-11-2026

MrFixr

Yes, I think it did away with the hi-pitch one. Thanks.

The foam under it though did very little if anything.

The radio is very finicky. The pots, if moved out of optimal position, either start motorboating or distorting the heck out of everything.
It is saturated easily: I have to de-tune some or all tuning caps. And a little bit the loop antenna: it has really sharp tuning curve. Almost all or nothing.

I will move it to the display room and try a bit of "DX-ing" Icon_smile

And, if all is OK and I am in KUtztown in a month, I will give a serious effort to looking for an AK horn. Or any good looking working horn, time-appropriate.
