EICO 666 unlisted tubes - k0nxm - 10-07-2025

Being the new owner of a Zenith 8G005 Trans-oceanic, and doing the preparations before restoration, I got out the trusty EICO 666 tube tester to test the tubes. Imagine my surprise to find that none of the tubes were listed in any of the charts I have. What to do? In a fit of inspiration, I checked the listings for the EICO 667, and sure enough the tubes were listed there (except for the 117Z6, another story). Could I be so lucky the settings would work for the 666 as well? Sure enough they do - the grid and plate settings are the same, as well as the V and S levers and shorts/merit buttons. For the other levers, just follow the numbers from left to right as you would otherwise, using only the first 10, ignoring the space between them and also the last 4 numbers. Of course, this only works for tubes with less than 10 pins, but even still, it's a tremendous help. 73 and good DX,

I restored one of these a few years ago. I replaced the 117Z6 with a couple 1N4007 Diodes and a zener on the tube filament circuit. The owner lost his hand warmer radio cabinet.

I have one, unrestored Amazingly, this 8G005, the 6G001, a DuMont RA354 and an RCA portable are all working with all of their original caps including the electrolytics. My Zenith 6S52 chassis has new electrolytics but all other caps are original. I will get around to recapping these sets, but something could be said about the quality of the caps. The other variable is that these Battery / Line powered sets don't draw much current and therefore don't generate much heat. K0NXM, you will have 73s and good DXing with that set.
