Philco Tropic 42-788

After some sanding and a couple coats of Medium Walnut...

I'm going to let this dry overnight, and then I will mask off the areas that need to remain Medium Walnut (top, sides, upper front, and lower control panel). The base, and the area around the speaker and two dials will need to be painted black, and I hope to accomplish that tomorrow evening.

Now I am working against the weather. The temps are supposed to be significantly cooler towards the end of the workweek, and it is supposed to rain Wednesday and Thursday, so I only had tonight and tomorrow night to work.

So here we go...

First, I carefully masked off the areas that would not get painted.

After three coats of Mohawk black gloss lacquer:

I waited a while, then carefully removed the paper and low-tack green tape:

The black bled through the tape in a few spots; I was able to carefully scrape most of the bleed-through off with a fingernail, though. I think it is going to be OK. The cabinet is not perfect, after all.

And along those lines, I noticed tonight that I did not get the grain fully filled. Oh well! My plan is to give it a few coats of clear lacquer tomorrow, and then that will be all until I have some decals special made. I don't like the font of Radio Daze's Philco Tropic decals.

Okay, so I'm picky. Pardon me.

At least now the cabinet is starting to look more or less as it did originally.

Thanks, guys.

I applied a few coats of clear lacquer this evening to protect the Medium Walnut toner and the gloss black lacquer. It was very humid here this evening; when Deft blushes, you know it is humid! Icon_eek

Fortunately, Deft is very forgiving, and the blushing has already disappeared. I didn't take any more photos because the cabinet looks the same as in the previous photos.

That is going to do it for the time being. If the weather cooperates, I will install new grille cloth on the speaker mounting board this weekend. But as I said previously, I can't finish the cabinet until I get some proper decals, which means I shall have to do my best to photograph a Philco Tropic decal and crop out the wood background, leaving only the decal, as a basis for someone to make some proper decals with the correct fonts.

And with cooler weather coming soon, that means no more cabinet work this year for me.

One pair of Bozak E-300s (which took most of the summer) and one Philco Tropic 42-788...well, it's a start. Hopefully I will be able to refinish more cabinets in 2017.

I merged Kirk's thread with the introductory thread I had started on this same subject to keep it all together...which is why this thread now has an extra page at the beginning.
