Speaker Wire
#1

Hi all in Philco Radioland,

I've run across a few of my restoration projects that need new wiring from speaker to under chassis, mostly for model 37's and the like. What type of wire do you normally use for this and above all, how can you make a series of three or four wires stay together slightly twisted and look neat? I've seen too many installations with those who improvise, use a good quality wire, then use electrical tape. I'd sure like better.

Hello:

Here's something for you to consider. Alpha Wire has a 4-conductor, 20 AWG cable that has a PVC jacket. Their website is http://www.alphawire.com

Just type in 1715 as an Alpha Part Number to see this item. You can also request say a 4-foot free sample here. This cable does not have the old style cotton covering but it may do. Antique Electronic Supply has 8 conductor cotton covered cables.

Hello Again:

Radio Daze has 4 conductor cloth covered cable. See http://www.radiodaze.com/catalog-306-page43-44.pdf

William,

Thanks, that's probably what I'm looking for from AES. I'm sure a bit of improvisation to keep the wiring harness together like some light adhesive would do the trick while I twist the wires around. Good deal. Thanks for the suggestion, and take care.

I bought the cloth covered wire from, I believe Radio Daze and twisted fairly tight like original then used a few plastic wire ties along its length. This was a console so it was three feet, give or take. The original has the cloth ties, that was like flat ribbon impregnated with rosin (resin) so it wouldn't unravel. I matched the colors to the original scheme but they are so bright compared to original you can spot them right away. PL
