Help with Philco 42-395
#1

A friend asked me to restore his 42-395. I have found that the power transformer has been replaced as has the rectifier. The 7Z4 has been changed to a 5Y3. What should I do?

Well, depends on what you mean by restore. A suitable power transformer and 5Y3 should work out OK provided it was hooked up correctly. And if it played for any reasonable amount of time after this conversion was done, probably good.

What else is wrong with the set? I believe I would try and find out, as well as follow the standard re-cap procedures if this has not been done very recently, and also many of the carbon resistors will have drifted way up in value.

It certainly is possible to "restore" to original in just about every sense, might take a while to hunt down original parts like power transformers.

Your set's schematic is here:

And mods to later version with PM speaker is here: http://www.nostalgiaair.org/Resources/538/M0013538.htm

Thanks! Will check components, especially the caps. Biggest problem I might have is the dial cord. I am recovering from some health issues and this will help keep my mind off of them.
