Adjustment of push buttons on Philco 41-290
#1

The Riders instructions for adjusting the push buttons on this radio indicate that a "Loctal aligning adapter, Part no. 45-2627" is required to make the adjustments. (See http://www.nostalgiaair.org/PagesByMode ... 013421.pdf for these instructions). Is there any way to adjust these push buttons without this adapter. I tried adjusting the oscillator and antenna screws as I have done on other similiar Philcos (the 42-355 comes to mind) with no success.

Thanks, Bob

I know Philco made some adapters for alignment to inject the signal from the signal generator so you could make a perfect adjustment with the radio in the cabinet. I fretted a while about whether I needed them. For my purposes I decided I don't.

I just turn the oscillator slug until I hear the station I'm trying to tune. I peak the signal by ear, then I carefully turn the antenna trimmer, then back to the slug, then back to the trimmer, until I'm satisfied. Usually I'll tune the manual tuner to the same station and switch back and forth until the best I can do with the push button adjustment is as good (and sometimes better) than I can do with the manual tuner.

This should be done with the radio in the chassis and the proper loop antenna connected. If you use a wire antenna like most of us have in the shop for bench test purposes, the frequencies will probably change when you connect the "real" antenna.
