Help with identifying model number
#1

Hello,

I think this may be either a 42-762 or 42-788. I am unsure because the speaker and dials are set up similar to the 762, but the top of the box looks more like a 788. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

It's a post war model actually, from the early 195os. Have a look under the 1953 Philco models, it's probably a 53-960, one of the last Philcos to have spread band shortwave on it, at least for the domestic U.S market. I think that the last to have it was a transistor portable.

Arran is correct - 53-960, the only Tropic-style radio that was sold in the USA rather than being sold as an export model.

Interesting, by 1953 Philco (USA) was no longer producing Tropics for export; they had turned that over to their UK and Argentina subsidiaries by then.
