Philco 60 Power Trans
#1

Hello,

The HV winding on the trans is about 700 volts no load. My meter (Fluke 115) only reads to 650 volts so I measured from center tap to each side of about 350 each. There is barely any current draw on the AC side. Does this sound high? The resistance is 157 and 177 ohms per side with total of 334. The schemtic says 275 ohms. This is all with the trans out of the chassis. I have replaced the wires as they were pretty crusty.

Thanks,
Dan

Dan;
I take it that you mean that the H.V winding reads 157 ohms on one side of the center tap, and 177 ohms on the other with a total of 334 ohms across both? If the schematic says 275 Ohm that does not sound like a problem, though the difference between the two outer legs of the H.V winding might be. If there is very little current draw from the primary side, and the transformer is staying relatively cool, then I think it's probably fine. Shorted turns on a H.V secondary will make the transformer overheat, and smell, well before burning up.

I am not 100% sure of the reason, likely due to the depth of the winding, but on HV windings of a power transformer and input winding of a Push Pull output transformer or the output windings of an interstage transformer that feeds a push-pull output stage, it is common for the readings between one leg and the center tap to be different from the reading between the other leg and the center tap.
