Philco 37-84 refinish advise.
#1

Hello from Ireland!
I have got a Philco 37-84 code 122 radio that I am restoring. It needs to be refinished. It has got a finish that I am not familiar with. It appears to be a painted wood grain effect with lighter and darker stripes No veneer, and it is cracking and flaking off. I was hoping that someone could advise me on the best way or the options of refinishing this cabinet.

Thanks in advance
Frank

Hi Frank,

That is called a "Photo Finish," since it's a paper-based "picture" of wood-grain over the base, cheap wood.

See the PHOTO FINISH links for info and repair from the MISC INFO page on my site:

Hi Chuck
Thanks for the quick reply.
I had a look at the site. It looks difficult to achieve a original finish particularly when there is stripes through it.
Thanks again for the info.

Regards

Also search the CABINET RESTORATION section of The Antique Radio Forums at http://www.antiqueradios.com

Photo-finishes have been discussed before at length and others have achieved very good results.

Good Luck!

Sláinte!

Chuck
