Coronado 42DL670
#1

Just finished this one. I doubt most have seen another one out there, although the cabinet style was used for several smaller Gamble Skogmo sets.

It has a W.G. 2DL 13-tube chassis and dual speakers. The variable IF (broad/sharp) is ganged with the tone control, you must turn it all the way cw for it to engage. The Airline 2DL chassis  models utilized a separate control for this. Others, such as LaFayette and Truetone, used the same as the Coronado.

Had to re-veneer the walnut burl on either side of the control panel, the entire front and top, one side, and the top of the substantial base.

As usual, my photography is dubious.

A sharp looking set, some consoles have almost a dignified look and this one does in my book. Like those store brand sets especially when they are well made, WG turned out some fine sets. Wells now makes machines for casinos I understand. Wells Gardner Technologies, McCook, Il.

Good listening.

That looks real nice Tom, the speaker grill area sunken down in towards the back I like with 3 vertical bars. I bet it sounds pretty darn nice and the burl on each side sets it off. Looks like a big cabinet, big like the PB2Y Coronado flying boat back in 1930,s. Good job Tom

I want it, Icon_lol

If it was a table model I would anyway... Absolutely beautiful veneering job Tom.

Yes, it's a large set and has very nice sound. With a quickie alignment it pulls in stations.

The two pillars on either side of the grillecloth have holes in them on the chassis side of the cabinet. I think this design has something to do with the nice bass response of this set.

Agree about WG sets, the higher tube count sets are usually very affordable and perform well. I also have a Truetone with an OEL  11-tube chassis that also sounds great and has the same ganged broad/sharp system. Also have a D-697 Truetone teledial with a WG A2 11-tube chassis. This one has a separate "broad/sharp" control directly under the dial. Interesting in that while it resembles the OEL in some respects and has the same tube count, it only uses one stage of IF amplification and is not as good a receiver as a result.

The mac-daddy of all W.G. sets is the 6F chassis, which featured 16 tubes, four 2A3/two 5Z3 power and 30W output. I have searched for years for one of these.

FYI note the Magnavox Regency next to it. These are usually inexpensive sets that pack a nice punch with respect to sound and reception. This one has 4-6V6 and 2-5Y3 on the power chassis, 21 tubes total counting the AM/SW chassis and the FM chassis. It offers 20W undistorted output, and although the SW band does not go below 5MHz, on the internal antenna it receives SW very well!!

That's a neat set Tom!   I used to have one just like it and have regretted trading it off several years ago.

Looks very nice!  Although I think it might be quicker to list the areas that still have original veneer.   Icon_biggrin
