American Bosch Model 802 auto radio
#1

Hullo everyone,
I found an American Bosch  Model 802 set at our local swapmeet yesterday ,complete with cables and head unit.Pleasingly it seems to be original inside too. It seems to date from about 1936.I have tried to find the schematic on Riders but with no luck so far . Do I lookup "A" for American or "B" for Bosch? Neither so far seems to have yielded any details.
The name "Essex" appears on a paper tag inside the set but my feeling is that Essex cars were no longer produced in 1936.Perhaps this was just a model name for the set and it had no connection to Essex or Hudson.I have a schematic from Radiomuseum but often the Riders entry shows more. If anyone can help I'd appreciate it.
Sorry to hear of your atrocious weather you are having.
All the best,

I think it would come under either American Bosch or United American Bosch. American Bosch made sets for the American Westinghouse company around that time as well. For some reason there was a tie in between Northern Electric and American Bosch, that made sets with almost identical chassis so I'm guessing that Northern Electric must have been making American Bosch sets under license. Grimes-Phonola/Dominion Electrohome used to do this with other U.S companies.
As for the Essex marque, Hudson owned Essex, and also owned the Terraplane marque, which apparently started under the Essex marque until Essex went away in 1933, so maybe the car radio was for a Terraplane but why mention the Essex name inside?

Hi Arran ,
 Thanks for your help with this radio.And especial thanks for letting me know to look it up under United American Bosch in Riders. That said ,after extensive searching on Riders  I found many United American Bosch sets but ,sadly , not model 802. Model 802 does appear in the Radiomuseum  list of sets made by Bosch. Perhaps the 802 was an export only set and Rider decided not to include it. Or my search of Rider was not exacting enough. But thanks again.

Hello again;
  I found a model 838 car radio on Nostalgia Air under United American Bosch, http://www.nostalgiaair.org/PagesByModel...022362.pdf single band, with eight tubes, 0Z4 for a rectifier.

I’ve found six United Bosch auto radio’s with the same 6-tube line-up as the 802, on NostalgiaAir. They are models 150, 160, 634, 636, 637, 638, and 19C. They may be similar to yours.

Hi Joe, Thank you again. The American Bosch Model 634A has the same tube lineup as my Model 802 and the parts layout diagram with the circular case is the same as mine. I have not begun work on it yet but it is a very nice feeling knowing that the schematic is probably right here if I run in to problems. Thanks again. You've been a great help.
