Philco 71 Cathedral chassis finish?
#1

I just picked up a couple pick-up truck loads of free radios from two different donors. Most of them were part-out sets, but there were a couple restorable gems. One of the items in the truck load is a Philco 71 cathedral. The cabinet is missing the rear support arch and needs a "lotta love" overall.
My question is on the chassis finish.... The finish on this 71 chassis has the slate gray finish, but has a lot of surface rust on top. What is the best way to go about restoring the finish on the chassis? I've seen the naval jelly/wire brush finish done to a bright finish, but seem to me that this method would leave a lot of "pitting" from deeper portions of rust. I like to keep things as original as possible, so what do you guys do to refinish those rusty Philco chassis?

Well if you wanted something that looks kinda original I'd clean off the rust use bondo or spot putty for the pitting then some gray primer to match the original color and sheen.
