H-940 model ???
#1

Hello Philco Friends !  How are you

This huge console is proposed on a french site , fitted with a radio set " Philco " , which seems to be a h-940 one

Do you know this model ?

Do you think the console is a Philco one , or a french made one , ?

Here after some photos the vendor sent to me

Thanks for your answer Icon_biggrin

This is a midcentury modern. Maybe someone here is into that.

As the resident mid century modern guy (who lives in the 1960 mid century ranch house) Icon_smile ...

That is not Mid Century Modern.

It looks more like the "Mediterranean" console style that was popular from the late 1960s into the 1970s, before stereo components began to take the place of those yuuuge floor model console stereos.

As for the model number, ordinarily the H in H-940 would indicate 1960 model year. But this stereo is much newer than 1960. It's clearly solid state and uses the Philco-Ford logo. I don't believe the Philco-Ford logo came into being until at least the mid-1960s, even though Ford bought Philco out in 1961.

If it was intended for the UK and European market (including France), then the model number may not mean anything (from a USA Philco perspective, that is).

My father used to own one of those, it's from around 1972 if I remember correctly, the cabinet was called "Spanish". There were some differences though, such as the record changer was black, not silver and chrome, the woofer speakers were 12 inch round, pincushion framed, rocker switches rather then slide switches, and the unit was branded as a "Silvertone" since it was sold by Sears, apparently made in Canada as well.
