What year is this radio? Did I overlook it in the Philco library?

Hi,

It is here:

https://philcoradio.com/gallery2/1936b/#Model_84B

It is a mid-season 1936 model (introduced January 1936).

A later version of the 80Jr. 4 tube Superhet that uses a regenerative detector but sounds amazingly good considering the bare bones circuit. The original 80 Jr sold for $14.95 with tubes in 1933! The 37-84 uses 6J7 Pentodes as the Autodyne 1st Detector and regenerative 2nd detector instead of the 36, and a 6F6 (the octal descendent of the 42) as a power amplifier. A 5Y4 replaces the 80. These sets were marked as a loss leader to get people into the showroom on a bargain for the sales rep to "upsell" the Customer to the better models. Another piece of history, and this being a deceased relative makes it even more special!!

BTW, when you find the correct sw / volume control knob, save that zenith one, they go for about $24.00 a pop on eBuy.

Hi JH and Welcome,

> My parents bought it on an installment plan and paid it out. $20!

I read an ad that described for the easy payment plan of $2 down and $2 a week this set can be yours. So in about 2 months & 2 weeks it was all yours.

If you wanted to fix it up a bit the dial  https://www.radiodaze.com/philco-37-84-3...m-ds-a318/ (Match pn with old one. There are two different ones.) and knob http://www.renovatedradios.com/product.php?product=20 are available as reproduction parts. It would have had a cloth covered power cord w/one of those old school round flattish plugs on the end. By now the original has about perished. Number 17 would a good match for the grille cloth if you wanted to replace it https://www.radiogrillecloth.com/products

If you need help getting it going there are a number of guys here that can help you out. I'm pretty familiar w/it as I have 5 or 6 of um.[Image: https://philcoradio.com/phorum/images/sm...n_wave.gif]

These are merely suggestions I understand that there may be some reasons to leave it in it's original condition. Just wanted to make you aware that there are some parts that being reproduced for that set.

GL and have fun w/your new project

When my pals were reading comic books
I was down in the basement in my dad's
workshop. Perusing his Sam's Photofoacts
Vol 1-50 admiring the old set and trying to
figure out what all those squiggly meant.
Circa 1966
Now I think I've got!

Hi JHammer,

I have one of those power plugs that Terry mentioned and it seems to be in good condition. I'll let you have it for the cost of shipping if we can figure out how to do that. Here's a photo.
