Philco 635 Shadow Meter
#1

Hello, Getting around to possibly rewinding the open shadow meter coil but I'm not sure how to take it apart further. The first picture shows the vane. It appears to be spring loaded because when i manually move the vane either way it springs back to center. Anyone have any idea how I would go about taking this apart to rewind? I think if I can take the vane out I could just cut away the wire and remove the pins where the wires would connect but I'm not sure and can't see how there is a spring in there. There are wires connected to the pins and they go inside the coil so I can't unwind wire.

Chuck Schwark’s archive “Philco Repair Bench” has some info. Perhaps it will help.

And some info from our library service tips

Thanks Klondike. I found a how to in the Philco Library on how to do my very coil. So I guess it can be done without taking the vane out. Must be my luck day.

Got the coil stripped and rewound. I'm reading 1750 ohms. I used #40 wire. Using the specs provided in the document below where the author had 1760 ohms I'd say I did a pretty good guess. I did the 9 volt battery test and the vane moves in both directions. Not sure how much it should move but I got movement anyway. Kind of lopsided but none will ever know.

Great. If the magnet and the pivot are OK, it should just work.

People who do not drink, do not smoke, do not eat red meat will one day feel really stupid lying there and dying from nothing.

I have the shadow meter all installed and it is working pretty good. What bulb would be the best bulb to use. I have a 55 in there now. It is going to be too dark once I get the chassis back in the cabinet. The one that was in there is a screw base, burned out and so corroded I can't read it.
