I got a GE K85
#1

A fellow that I know who buys and sells scrap metal gave me a call today and said he was cleaning out a property and they had this old radio that they didn't want.. he said I could have it .. So I met him and this is what I brought home FOR FREE.. I have not had a chance to look at it but all the tubes are there and the speaker looks good.
It's a 1933/34 GE k85,,,[RCA 140] Not a bad deal for free

Nice looking set!

Oh, a Canadian G.E, nice set but not easy to work on, other then the one knob and a few tubes it looks pretty complete, the cabinet should come up good, I think it's a 1933 model. That's one thing that I need for my collection, a six legged C.G.E console from 1933-34, preferably one of the square dial sets, I have an M81 and an M61 which are tombstones, and a parts chassis for one of the 12 tube consoles of that year. Believe it or not Canadian G.Es were not made by Canadian RCA even though they use the same chassis design, they were built in the G.E plant in Toronto jaust as the Canadian Westinghouse sets were built in Hamilton. With the American G.E sets it was a different story, up until 1936 they were built by RCA in Camden, New Jersey. I think it was related to an anti trust judgement against RCA in 1930, before that G.E and Westinghouse manufactured radios for RCA. Was there anything else radio related in that house? Chassis are of course made out of steel and a lot of early sets had steel cabinets, not to mention speakers, transformers, etc.

Arran,,there was not any other radio related stuff in the house at all.
I had a chance to look at the radio and there were mice in it at some time but non of the wires were chewed up.
As you say it does not look easy to work on. I am not in a rush to get to it . Thanks for the information Dan

Agree about this family of chassis NOT being easy to work on. But many are nice looking and playing sets. My R7A is a super player. But restoring the chassis caused me to utter Milton-esque length sentences of invective. No, make that War and Peace length invective. Fort Bragg called me and said that I was embarrasing the paratroopers. Yep. Honest...

And people think 25 years in the Marines doesn't give you marketable skills......
