Joe's Maggie
#16

Hi Steve thanks for the reply as you can see I am confused on the finish color. It sorta looks like blonde then it looks like a oak (golden oak) one of the replys suggested maybe limed oak. But thanks for the replay and help. Joe

Hi all. Guess what? I found the info plate to the maggie in the cabinet. Dont know why I overlooked it. The model is 154B and the Style is C106-39 and I am hoping that the B in the model number means it is a blonde finish, can some one back me up on this? I first though it was blonde now I hope this comfirms it. Is there any Magnavox experts out there that can tell me I am right? Joe

Good luck with it, Joe. Icon_thumbup

The only real Magnavox expert on the Phorum that I am aware of is Doug Houston, so you might want to drop him an email.

O K I refinished the maggie cabinet. Icon_confused I do not have before pictures but there was almost no finish to the cabinet. I dont think I did a very good job, Icon_neutral and this will be my last console to try to refinish. Icon_rolleyes I used Mohawk blonde toner, it looks too yellow to me, I think I put it on too heavy, Icon_sick but you can see the wood grain up close. I could not get the toner to "flow" it has streaks in the finish I could not find a way to stop it. But it is finished and I will not try another. Icon_cry So here it is. Thanks for all the comments on this project, I will have to face the fact that I cannot refinsh cabinets. Icon_mad

Sure you can! Looks OK to me. And if you can still see the woodgrain, then you did alright.

Refinishing is not an easy process. Like you, I felt that I could not refinish cabinets. I've sprayed lacquer on cabinets before, but they always ended up looking like an amateur refinish job because I was not using grain filler, and did not have the technique of sanding between so many coats down pat yet. So after many tries, failures, and poor results, I came to the conclusion that I should stick to chassis work and leave the cabinets to others.

But this year, I determined that I was going to learn how to properly refinish cabinets. My first efforts with using grain filler and sanding between coats turned out OK (Philco 38-14 and 39-7). A Philco 40-155 was a setback, it did not turn out as well as the first two. But after that, my technique gradually began to improve. I refinished a Philco 40-125 and it came out great. I moved on to an Atwater Kent 33, and it doesn't look bad at all. Next up, I refinished a Philco 16B shouldered tombstone, and it turned out even better. My latest project, which I finished this morning, is a Philco 53C cigar box pee-wee...and it was a wreck when I began. Now, I think I have finally achieved a good piano finish with this one.

I suggest you practice on small wood table model radios, and gradually work your way up to larger sets. If I can do this...you can, too.

Wow, that set is...Snazzy. When I was a kid, we had a neighbor who had a whole house full of "Blonde" furniture, to match the lady of the house. For sure there was a big radio, could have been a Maggie, don't remember. Gone now, all.

That looks very nice good job Icon_thumbup

Don't beat your self up if it doesn't look just right to you. The only way you will ever get better at refinishing is to keep trying. I've had to strip the new finish of some cabinets I have done a couple times to get it looking the way I want.
