New 18
#1

I'm new to the Phorum but have been Phixing Philcos since the Phifities. My new 18 arrived today and I can't wait to get started on her. Brought her up on the Variac and good news so far. The filaments light! That's pretty much the end of the good news. No Sound. Hey it's a good start. No smoke, no sparks is always a good start. New caps and resistors are on the way. I ordered new veneer for the top and the front panel. She's a little rough looking but still beautiful in my eyes.

I wouldn't apply power again until recap has been completed. A quick check of the HV windings with the rectifier removed would be OK. (Should be just about same AC voltage on each plate pin to center tap.) Also, with power disconnected winding(s) for output transformer can be checked for continuity. At least then you know pretty much status of iron.
This is going to be a wonderful set!

codefox1,
Thanx for the advise. I'm not crazy about rewinding iron so I hope it's all good. Baaad luck with the tubes though. ALL of them tested on the low end of marginal (the 80 was completely dead).
I've never had a set with so many bad firebottles I ordered all new(ish), big ouch in the wallet department.

Philament, don't throw out the old tubes. I can't tell you how many I have replaced that measured real low on the tube tester and the new ones didn't make any difference in performance. Dead, yes replace. I have a pair of 45s on my latest project that are in the 8 to 10 percent range on conductance and yet seem to be working well. All the other tubes are in the "replace" mode but still seem fine. We will see how things go and I get into the radio (a 111 philco).

Good luck
Jerry

+1 I would get another 80 to start after the recap job and see where it goes. Most old tubes can still deliver a little bit longer. Sure, good set of users would be great, place a WTB on the classified section, and you can find a connection. Remember most old carbon resistors are also probably drifted high, and it's cheap and easy to replace them at the same time as the capacitors when you place your order.

jerryhawthorne, Thanx, I will keep the old ones and do some tube rolling to see if there is any difference once I get her up and running.
codefox1, my brand new/ old stock 80 arrived today. I have a large stock of resistors and I agree. As long as I'm in there, I'll replace those too.
Thanx again to both of you for your advise.
