push pull vs single ended
#1

Hi All;
I am going to repeat my question that I stated in my wanted philco 45 audio transformer section, just in case It did not get noticed..
Can a Push-pull Transformer be used in a Single ended transformers place ?? If the impedence matches..
Or is the windings on the push-pull transformer on each side wound opposite of each other ??
I can get a universal push-pull transformer that matyches my impedience for my 42 tube, but not a single ended transformer that will match perfectly its impedence..
THANK YOU marty

Yes, radio output tubes are not all that fussy about impedence matching, you would be good with anything from 4 to 8K to your speaker load for single ended 42. If you have a Push-Pull that has a primary in this range, you can use it, just tape up the middle tap of the primary, or just use one leg of the primary if it is a closer match. Any slight mismatch would only minimally affect the volume and would not cause any harm. Anyway, if you are not happy, you can always change it out for another one.

Hi All;
CodeFox, Thank You for your prompt reply.. I was hoping that it would be OK to use a Push-Pull transformer..
I have contacted Gary at OldRadioParts and the first two I wanted He had already Sold, So I sent Him some more numbers and I am awaiting a reply from Him.. Otherwise I can get a Universal PushPull from Hammond..
THANK YOU marty

No you cannot use the same size/power pushpull instead of SE. It will saturate. At best you will have your sound degraded, at worst you will screw up your tube.
However if the transformer is oversized or air-gapped (possibly) then you may use push-pull type, but it does need to be oversized.
