I contacted the three names listed in the resource section of this website to see about getting the speaker for my PT-94 reconed. Here's what I found:

Hank Brazeal's wife said he has suffered a stroke and no longer does speaker repair.

Orange County Speaker doesn't service the old electromagnetic speakers: "We don't work on those types of speakers. We don't carry any parts or anything aftermarket that would work for it. We mainly repair large PA Speakers (JBL, EAW, Altec, Community, etc.)"

Both, however, recommended this source:

Jackson Speaker Service - Speaker Reconing by Ron McGee, is still in business, and Ron quoted me $45 for the reconing plus $7 for shipping. Turn around is in about a week.

Just thought I'd post this for what it's worth. This is just a little 4" diameter speaker, so obviously a speaker for a big console will probably run more.

For what it's worth, I recently had a 10" Zenith speaker reconed by Matt Sheldon of Utah reconers. Very happy with the job. Cost me $55.00 which included return shipping. I paid shipping out to him. Stats follows:

Thanks for the advice. Could someone post the contact information for The Speaker Shop? When (and if!) Ron has a spare moment at some point, perhaps he can update the speaker repair section under the resources tab, eliminating Hank Brazeal and Orange County Speakers, and adding the others that have been posted here in their place.

They are highly recommended. I will definitely add a link to them on my site...and correct/delete the others as needed...but preparing to move, and then the actual move, and then unpacking/sorting out/etc. has to come first.

Oh absolutely, Ron. This certainly should wait until after you're settled in to your new home (and unpacked, and finished decorating, etc. etc.) It's not pressing by any means. That said, best of luck with the move!

I used the Speaker Shop before, they are a decent house.
That was after I contacted Hank and he said (that was 2.5 years ago) he would not take the job.
They re-coned my 20's speaker.

I wonder what the hangup is with that Orange County outfit and electrodynamic speakers, the only real difference is in the type of magnet used? A speaker cone is a speaker cone, as long as the diameter of the cone is the same, and the hole in the center is the same, a new cone will work even if it looks a bit different from the original. I guess what it really is is that they get to charge a bigger markup, and the newer speakers require less thinking to fix. I found one reason not to use the Speaker Shop unless you can drop off and pick up, they are another follower of "The Church Of Brown", I would not entrust that company to ship a bag of manure let alone a vintage speaker. I have heard good things about a place in Oregon that recones, I'm not sure if that is the same outfit I heard of, do they rebuild car radios?

He did a great job for me on a Crosley 6" speaker. Good price and quick turn around. Maybe he should be added to the list.

You must be referring to JAMAC. I've had a lot of speakers done by them (I'm an ex Portlander).
