Best way to narrow searches
#1

I am frustrated with the search feature. I am trying to narrow the search for dial stringing for 40-195, 40-200, 40-201 to just those models. I am getting at least 20 pages of results to wade through, most of which have models that bear no relationship to the model(s) I am interested in. This is true even if I put in the model no. first+dial restring or dial restring+model no. There must be a way to restrict the response of the search feature that I do not know about.

Joe, can't help you with the search feature but the 40-195/40-200 file on this web site has a dial stringing diagram on the last page. http://audiophool.com/Philco.html . Looks complex however Icon_sad

Here's a dial string web site that is very handy http://www.theoldradiofixerupperguy.com/...0cord.html

and here is the string diagram blown up:

Hope that helps.

Bob;

Thanks for that illustration. You can understand my frustration with searches on this topic. Although the illustration you found is likely correct, imagine scrolling through all the 337 previous illustrations just find this particular one.Icon_crazy I managed to make a blow-up of the illustration shown on the schematic pages for the 40-195,40-200, 40-201 data and concluded that it is essentially the same as the one you found. There may well be other Philco models that use the thumb-wheel controls that also use this same dial stringing instruction.

I feel confident now that I can restring the dial. The radio uses two dial strings, not just one. It was not obvious in the beginning that was the case. The springs that go on the pulley attached to the tuning capacitor are missing from my radio, so I will have to find something to substitute.

Thanks.

I generally just use Google's search engine on google.com and it will provide results from this Phorum and others. In this case "dial stringing" brought up the Old Radio Fixerupper Guy web site as the first hit. He has an index that points you to the correct page. Just lucky maybe...

Bob;

OK, I will try that next time. I normally use Yahoo instead out of habit.

Thanks very much for the illustration, as it was spot on.Icon_clap I had some multi-strand braided fishing line that I managed to use for the dial pointer cord. However, when I tried it on the tuning knob to the pulley on the ganged capacitor, it slipped too much. There was still some of the original cord that was long enough, so I used it and it grips much better - no slippage. Philco did a good job in separating the dial pointer cord from the drive cord. It makes the whole process much easier.

Joe
