Beginning a Restore on a Philco Model 60
#1

Hi Philco Lovers,

I am beginning a restore on a Philco 60. It says it is a Code 121, and I can see from Ron's article's on the evolution of the Model 60, that different releases of this radio were all labeled "Code 121".

What are your opinions of and experiences of the Model 60?

Ron, in one post someone mentioned that it is NOT one of your favorite Philcos. Is that true? Why is that?

Thanks!

I'm just finishing up restoring the chassis on my 60B. Then onto the cabinet. Look a few threads down.

It isn't a bad radio to restore. Lots of room and not too complicated. Enjoy the restoration and I hope it turns out to be rewarding.

Thanks Crist. I remember glancing at your restoration thread. Absolutely amazing craftsmanship. You sure set the bar high. I don't think I have that kind of effort in me, but it will inspire me to do the best job I can.

Thanks,

Mark

I had fun doing a 60MB a few months back.  As Crist said, not bad fo work on.  In my thread there's a link to Bob Andersen's Youtube video series that I found helpful.

My model 60 was the last revision. I found it easy to work on. Doesn't sound half bad for a table/cathedral.

The only down side to them is there is a 99.9% chance one or both of the coils have a bad outside winding. Good news is Ron did a great job documenting the coil windings in one of the threads here. And these windings are very forgiving if your wind job isn't the greatest.

Well if you want to know the down side (to me) about the 60. Philco made about a billion of them not that I'm always looking for something rare but there everywhere. Bad coils (not a big deal) Poor SW coverage (66 is much better). I think as I get older I like working on set that are a bit more of challenge/w better performance. No rf amp and one IF amp.
Is it a bad radio of course not just a fairly basic superhet. And do like 80,81, and 84's. It also maybe the first Philco to use a pentigrid converter. I'm sure Ron would know.
Also bear in mind I've been doing radio for almost 50yrs

I have brought a Philco Model 80 Junior and a Model 19 back to life. I am close to applying power to this Model 60. On my shelf, in my "backlog", I have another Model 60, an 84, and an 89.

Love the Philco cathedrals! They are classy. ;-)
