Zenith 5-S-119 Cabinet
#1

I posted this over on the BARK site mostly to see if anybody said anything about my choice of toner color. Zenith did use the same pigment as the inside, only darker and gloss. That is, the trim is very dark blue. If you don't believe me, next time you strip one of these 1937 cabinets wipe the dark base with a white rag soaked in thinner or stripper and see what color comes off.

Anyway I expected a lot of barking especially after the thread about how you don't need to align a radio after a recap/reresistor restoration. Which I found a little unbelievable - ah - scratch that. I guess some people aren't as picky as us "Purists" (quote from thread).

So - -

It dried out enough yesterday to sand the sealer/grain filler coats. The dye had already been applied to the white wood.

Prior to the first finish coats, dark blue toner was applied in all of the trim areas that appear dark/black. No other toner was used.

These are the first 3 finish coats. there will be at least 3 more after sanding, possibly 6 after sanding twice. It will have to dry for at least a week first. After I decide on the final coat, it will be sanded and buffed out.

I don't like to sand or paint inside unless I really have to. Too much dust.

The chassis is finished. All of the caps have been restuffed. A couple of missing caps were replaced with the correct part number originals (also restuffed). The correct filter cans were installed. New dogbone resistors rated at least 2W were used to replace the out of tolerance originals (new ones match the originals in appearance). It was aligned.

I'll post a before and after pic of the chassis. Need to take the "after" pic.
