I agree with the spray lacquer. Much closer to the original finish used on these and much easier to strip if things go badly. I usually use DEFT gloss and after serveral, sometimes 6 or 7, coats with some sanding in between if needed I'll rub it out with rottenstone or a fine pumice followed by a paste wax. But that's just me, others have their own steps and produce fine looking end results. DEFT is found in most hardware and big box stores. I also use one of these masks when spraying lacquer, toner and paints.
