Hallicrafters started making AA5 and AA6 versions, i think in the late 1940 to early, for example, the SX38 in tis various revisions. I don't know if they were cheapening their brand by doing so. I think that they were just bringing shortwave to a new generation, especially the GIs that came home from around the world and the HAMs that may have bought this set as their first comms set (assuming that they did not try to buy and mod war surplus equipment.
