A shunt is in parallel with something else. In this case the shunt resistor is across the DMM input, in parallel with the signal coming from the test leads.

Bear in mind that no tube tester can tell you that a tube is good, it can only tell you when a tube is definitely bad.
I use two tube testers - a Hickok 533 for small-signal tubes, and an EICO 625 to check emission in power tubes.
