Philco 42-400 With Add On Fm Adapter
#1

today I was asked to look at an old radio the Elk's Lodge here in town had that come out of their rental property. Initially I thought it was a repro since they said it was AM/FM. But then he said it had tubes, so I had to go look.

Turns out it is a Philco 42-400 that one of the local radio shops installed an add on FM unit to in 1951. The date was written in pencil on the chassis. The tube adapter was installed on one of the 6F6G tube sockets and grounded onto the chassis. The shielded cable was plugged into the chassis. I am assuming it must have worked, but have never heard of this type of setup before.

This could be great as I have a 42-400 with a cabinet that is in pretty nice shape. This one was in a damp area and has a lot of delamination as well as some missing veneer and glue joints coming apart.
