This is dandy but how does it affect the hum?

I can not answer that question but have seen some strange things happen when hots and neutrals are crossed. Maybe similar to what happens when you reverse the plug on some AA5 sets. Have seen stuff hum if there were more than one breaker box and the neutrails in the second box are not isolated. David
