Looking for comments on speaker cloth
#1

Looking for comments on speaker cloth for this Crosley. The stuff that is in it is one option. My other choices are whiskey rayon or new leaf reverse side from richmonddesignsinc.com. The old stuff is trash.  And you can see what it looked like when I got it.

What model Crosley is that Chris? Just wondering what the original cloth looked like.

Here's whats left of it. It's in pretty bad shape. And the model is a 625 I think. It is battery powered unit and I can't find a schematic for it.

Yes it's a 625. Here are some more pics. Apparently it's an unusual one. I would say rare but no.

Whiskey Rayon looks good in most radios, but you can see the original pattern better in person.  The reverse New Leaf would give it more of a pattern, so that's my vote.

Yes I like the wiskey rayon. I have used it some other radios. I think it's just a little too fine a weave for this big a radio. I think the grandma's couch pattern that I have shown kinda goes with the style of case.

I think this one on the Radio Museum site is Whiskey Rayon - seems like a reasonable replacement to me:
https://www.radiomuseum.org/r/crosley_625ec.html

It looks like that cabinet is shared between a few models:
  • 625EC - 6 tubes, 3 bands, DC
  • 815EC - 8 tubes, 2 bands, DC
  • 915EK - 9 tubes, 5 bands
  • 1055EK - 10 tubes, 5 bands

TubeRadioLand has a nice photo of the 1055EK:
http://www.tuberadioland.com/crosley1055ek_main.html

He remarks about the 'space invaders' grille cloth - perhaps that is what the set had originally?

I have no idea about originality, but I do like the cloth you show in the first picture. The subtle symmetric pattern seems to fit the style of the cabinet, at least to my eyes.

I don't hold with furniture that talks.

Yes the tuberadioland crosley does have the same cloth as what mine came with. The wiskey rayon I have is a much finer weave.

Not sure... IT is not terrible but there is something about it... IT looks a little... ?? Maybe it is too light? If you tone it a little it will be more of the brownish.
If YOU like the one in it now then who cares what someone else thinks. You are the one who has to look at it every day. Icon_wink

I think I read somewhere that you can soak and tint the grille cloth using teabags and steeped water to give it kind of an aged look. Never have done this myself, but might be worth checking into.

I have tried things that sound clever and they do not work, sometimes unconvential yields results. ya neva know, give it a try.

Still, I would do a little research first before possibly ruining a $25+ cloth...
