38-116 tuning system
#1

I am working on a 38-116 and the tuning mech. is bound up. The band switch and tuning both turn together. The 2 split gears are locked together and I cannot tell how things should work. I have Ryders and philco service bulletin 273 but they do not have exploded views to see how things should work. Any suggestions?

I determined the problem with the tuning system. The plastic mask disk had shrunk so much that it would not turn on the metal hub. I cut it at the bottom where it can not be seen and now it works fine. Some one else may have the same problem since all these radios are the same age. I epoxied a small strip across the split to stabalize it. All seems well.

Now that's unusual! I had never heard of the plastic disk shrinking before. I guess we shouldn't be surprised, though; these things are now 73 years old, and they aren't getting any younger.
