Looks good Mike! 

The first radio I restored was your radios predecessor, the 5-S-127.  Long story, but it was given to me as a young teen by very good friends of our family, but didn't get restored until several years later when I was in the USAF.  I was very impressed with its performance also and DX'd many shortwave and BC stations with it.  I probably ought to pull it out, replace the belt, give it a polish, and freshen up cap/resistors one of these days.

Yes that is also a very good looking set and seems to be almost the same other than the grill.

The performance of it should be pretty much the same as my 6 tune count vs your 5 is achieved by splitting 6Q7 diode-triode tube into separate 6H6 and 6F5 diodes and triode. Same output and likely the same speaker.

I have the same model radio (Zenith 6S229), purchased the exact same way (last minute impulse while leaving Kutztown -- exactly five years later than OP), with the exact same problem.  I have never replaced or repaired a band, on a Zenith or any other vintage radio; could you explain the process in greater detail?  the radio works fine otherwise, and I can even tune it by reaching inside and moving the bread slicer manually (I know, bad idea -- but it works).

If by the band you mean the driving belt, I honestly do not remember, this was over 5 years ago, b ut every time I had to do it, it is so self-explanatory that I did not bother to look for instructions or to try to document it. Kinda like changing a bicycle chain. Two pulleys, the belt goes on that's it.

Just pull the chassis and look at where the belt goes; it will be pretty much self-evident.
You will, I think, have to remove the dial assembly to change it.
