philco 40-150
#1

hi folks, I have a question for the forum. can the above model be made to work without the power transformer? if so, how would one go about it?
#2

In an absolute sense - yes. But you are still going to need a power supply, probably using a transformer.

In a practical sense - no.

I take it that the original trans. is no good?

yes, the orig transformer was missing from the radio.

I only took a quick look at Rider's, but, it appears that trans was used on several models. You might want to put up a WTB ad here, or there is a guy selling transformers on E-Pay - for too much $.

ARS (Antique Radio Supply) sells new transformers which are not exact replacements but often you can find an acceptable replacement. These too are not cheap.

o.k., i guess its going back on the shelf. i really don't want to put a lot of money in this project. thanks for your response.

Best keep an eye out for a used one.

Other radios that use the same or similar tube combinations can also be a source.

There is a classified listing on ARF  https://antiqueradios.com/forums/viewtop...5&t=369280   for transformer for a 40-185, not the same part number but, probably close enough. the 40-185 has one more tube.
