41-255T Restoration
#1

I got this today. This had already been worked on electrically recently - note new caps. I’ve got to check
out whatever that white paper container is. Even the wiring looks like new.

Otherwise, aside from a missing speaker which I need to source - see my WTB post - this is all just cosmetic stuff. The hardest thing to find will be that metal trim strip for the knobs.

The case is in almost perfect shape - one bit of goo came off. The only defect I can see is a light water stain ring on the top. I’m just going y clean and wax the case.

I’m just shocked at the wonderful state of this - and I paid $30

I need a speaker for my 41-255t which is listed as Philco part 36-1483.

I see a junk 41-221 for sale with a speaker partnnumber 36-1512

Anyone know if this will work in a 41-255T OR what
Philco speakers in other models will be acceptable?

I’ve been told that the 41-255 specs at 1000 ohms
but haven’t been able to find any actual specs on Philco speakers.

Honestly, most Philco sets in any given model year used very similar specifications, with only minor build differences. Size and how they mounted seems to be the variable. As long as you are close with the field coil and voice coil values, you will most likely be good. There isn't a lot of information available on the later 30's and 1940s-50s speakers like there was on the 1928-36 models. I have the speaker data sheets on earlier sets and pretty much all specifications including acceptable substitutions are listed in the sheets.

Anybody ever come across data sheets for later sets?

You want a 6 inch electrodynamic Philco speaker with 1100 ohm field coil. This eliminates the 41-221 as a possibility, as its speaker is smaller than that.

The original part number is either 36-1483-2 or 36-1483-4, used in models 40-150, 40-155, 41-250 & 41-255.

Similar models with the same field coil specs: 36-1519-3, used in model 41-256 & 42-355.

Models 39-25 and 39-30 also use 6 inch speakers, but their field coils are rated at 2000 ohms.

Enough 40-150, 40-155, 41-250, and 41-255 models were made that you should not have too much trouble finding a suitable replacement.

Thanks.

I’ve located a 41-250 with a speaker. Now I will have both models - the 250 needing restoration and a speaker. Your post clarifies what I am looking for.

Ron - not Philco related but I bought a 1947 Meck True Tone last week when I was in Indiana. Sort of different.
For a 10th generation Hoosier it’s sort of nice to
have something from Plymouth.

Your 41-255 speaker thread was merged with your other 41-255 thread as it is on the same subject radio, per Phorum Rules.

Thanks.
