Ground wire
#1

I have a ground wire attached to the back of my 1934 PHILCO radio. Do I attach the other end to anything?

What model?

Model 60 or 505. Chassis type: 60
Code: 121
Another number on the back is: D70466

If you are working on a 60, you should review the following article on the Evolution of the 60 found in our library: https://philcoradio.com/library/index.ph...-model-60/

Are you referring to the clip on the chassis that is probably labeled GND? I worked on a 60MB and it had a GND clip and and ANT clip. The GND would have been connected to a copper cold water pipe in the old days to provide a solid ground for the radio. I just leave mine disconnected and the radio seems to work fine.

Hi Stonehouse,

In the old days, radios were connected to a long wire antenna. That was one connection. Ground was another connection. These connected to the primary of the antenna transformer. Using the ground will increase the strength of the signals received. Whether you need it to pick up desired stations depends on your area. You can receive strong stations without it, as the chassis is capacitively coupled to the hot and neutral of your house power. Neutral is connected to ground. If the hum is excessive, ground to a water pipe.

This is a transformer powered set. AC-DC sets were rarely grounded as the chassis could be "warm" or "hot" electrically.

Thanks for the info.

Another question: the light behind the tuning dial is not working. It’s the light that shows that the radio is turned on
. Is it difficult to change the bulb and where would I get a new bulb?

according to the schematic in our library https://philcoradio.com/library/download...l.%201.pdf its a part no. 6608 which translates to a #46 bulb, a 6.3v 250mA screw base bulb. (See: https://philcoradio.com/library/index.php/parts/lamps/)

Among other places they are available at https://www.tubesandmore.com/products/di...screw-base

Thanks for the help!

You may find this at a good hardware store. Radio Shack used to carry them when there was a Radio Shack.
