Philco 37-611
#1

I am new to the Phorum and need help.  I have a 37-611 Big Bullet and the schematic is confusing. It has been work on prior to my acquiring it.  The chassis has some aspects of the 610 and some of the 611. In mine there are three electrolitics and two Bakelite condensers.  There is a wire wound resistor next to the dual Bakelite condenser I can’t locate on the schematic.  It has 4 solder lugs where the wires have been cut and I am not sure where to connect them. In another section there are 2 condensers and a resistor wired to ground in my radio that don’t show on my schematic but do show on the schematic for the 610. Very confusing.

Nick,

It would be helpful if you take this picture, open it in Paint (or what else) and use red arrows/circles to point to the parts you mention.

This said, myself, I usually strip the parts I cannot find in the sch, if it is clear they were added later by a restore person. After having made sure they do not belong in the original.

I'm with Mike on this, though I am not an E.E, like Mike I tend to put the radio back to it's original form, electrically, since I tend to trust that the engineering staff of Philco, RCA, or whomever, knew enough to make certain that the set worked more or less properly when it left the factory. You often end up chasing your tail trying to figure out someone else's work, and why they did something, I've been running into that in communications receivers lately. For a start you don't have a 611 chassis on the bench, it has a power transformer and the 611 is a series string AC/DC set. So I would assume that the set is one of the versions of a 37-610.

Arran's right.

It is 37-610, not 611.

The next season it was the same cabinet but grillwork varied.

Arran,

You don't need to be bashful "I am not an EE": you have tons more experience with the antique radios than I do. Being an EE helps to learn things quicker than I would have otherwise, but experience matter the most.

Take Terry: he is not an engineer, but when he starts on soem topics, I get lost as...he by now forgot more stuff than I have learned.

We have one fellow listed in NY, Jim Koehler, in our Resources pages, you could try emailing him.

However I think he's in Long Island and that's quite a haul from Rochester.
