41-608
#1

Hello All
Got a 41-608 with a BOL that I re-capped and has been playing well. I have A ceramic cartridge and recently high notes are distorted and it seems to not have the power it had but the radio plays strong. Any suggestions are appreciated

Hi Philco4Me,

Are you piping the phono through the same preamp connection that was used for the BOL pickup? Are you using the transformer that was used for the BOL?

Obviously, there are 2 possible scenarios, either the cartridge or the circuitry. Try connecting the cartridge to another amp. The aux input should work for many ceramic cartridges. Alternatively, connect another turntable with a ceramic cartridge or other external source to the phono input. However, you need to be able to attenuate the signal. The headphone output of a CD player should work.

Ceramic cartridges could go bad. The stylus could have become damaged. The tube could have become gassy. You coud swap the preamp with the 1st audio amp if both are type 7C6. If radio performance suffers, then the tube swapped into the 1st AF section was bad.

Hope this helps.

So only one 7c6.

This may seem like an odd question but is this with the original 78 RPM record player, or is this a replacement one you are working with? If you still have the original Beam Of Light machine I would hang onto it, the pickup can be rebuilt, and they are rather neat to see in action with the glowing headshell.
