Philco 645 Shadow Meter
#1

Hello, I have a Philco 645 that is missing it's shadow meter. I purchased a Philco 630 that has a shadow meter but the cabinet got badly damaged so I guess I'll just use the 630 as a parts radio. Since I don't know what the 645 meter looks like can someone tell me if the 630 meter will work and fit in my 645?

Thanks,
Dan

They should be the same.
At any rate, you have the meter, see if the hardware fits.
These radios use the same type escutcheon, so I suspect the shadometer is also the same.

They are not directly interchangeable, but you could get it to work providing it physically fits. The shadow meter from this group of Philcos were pretty much physically the same. The main difference is the circuitry. The coil for the 645 is listed as 500 ohms and the 630 is not listed but has a 4K resistor in parallel. From experience I believe it's around 2K. Doing the math you can use a 680 ohm resistor in parallel with the coil of the Philco 630 shadow meter to get the 500 ohms and wire it in place of the broken one. Plus, you get the additional benefit of not loosing the radio signal if the coil should open in the future.

Sounds good I'll give it a go. Probably be a while as I need to clean the chassis and get it ready to restore the electronics. Probably be winter time.

The shadows get longer in the winter time.

I noticed that.
