Restoring a 1957 Zenith High-Fidelity Radio-Phonograph Console, Model HF21E
#1
Music

It was left in a shed/workshop by the previous homeowner. Back panel is missing, signs of chewing from rodents on the wires, very dirty and dusty. I looked it up online, google ai and such which said I’d have to replace the plug and wires with a modern 3 prong plug and modern PVC lined wire, as well as possible work on the turntable. But I want second opinions from real people and possible advice from an expert on restoring this piece of history.

One caution: make sure you wear a respirator or a mask, gloves, preferably take that outside to some realli remote corner of the property and empty the whole thing and then desinfect.
If it is a fresh rodent poop, the hantavirus is always a possibility.

I have to wonder where these things come from, no it doesn't need a grounded cord and plug, you can add one if you like but this unit has a power transformer so there is electrical isolation from the power line anyhow. The other thing to keep in mind that it has plastic knobs, and is housed in a wooden cabinet, so the chances of coming into contact with anything electrical is next to zero for the end user. Even if a three conductor grounded power cord was added the record changer is not, so you would have to add a ground wire to that too. The main things this unit will need is the caps replaced, and the resistors checked, then the changer will need to be serviced, old grease cleaned out, and replaced with fresh, and the phono cartridge may or may not be any good. Radiotvphononut on Y.T has a lot of videos where he services record players, so does David Tipton, and Don's Old Radio Shed. if you want to get some idea, you don't necessarily have to do a complete tear down though.

I was able to vacuum the interior out and move the record player to a cleaner space. Also Arran, thanks for suggesting some online sources/videos for servicing old record players. I will have to check them out.

Discard the vacuum bag, if it has any mouse poop in it.

I inspected some of the wiring, found some that were probably chewed by mice as there was a very old nest inside(It was sitting unused and unplugged for 10-20 years at a minimum), as well as bandaids and masking tape around parts of the wiring which was apparently a household fix for wiring in the 20th century. I won’t be plugging it in anytime soon but now I am unsure how to proceed.

Well,

Now I am not sure I understood you.

Initially I thought you had some experience in working with electronics. And just needed some pointers on this specific class of devices.

Now you have seen a mouse nest and bandaids, and now are not sure how to proceed?

Is it the nest and the bandaids, or you do not know how to proceed altogether?
