I just finished a complete electronics & complete rewire restoration on a Philco 41-280 that uses the same outdoor longwire antenna balancer plug-in unit. I think you need to make sure the switch contacts on your longwire antenna coupler is making good contacts and clean them with Deoxit, then spray them with WD-40. The switch seems to be not working properly! Not much change in your Radio reception. However, the 41-280 model I just restored, there is a Huge difference when switching the "local -long distance" switch on back of the chassis. The long distance setting greatly improves both AM & Shortwave reception on this set here. Seems that something is wrong in your "switch" on the plug-in box. Night & Day difference when working correctly, and not happening at all on your video! Spray the switch with contact cleaner! Your "missin" it!! Once you get the switch cleaned up, leave it on "distant" setting, you WILL hear the Big difference in reception off your outdoor longwire antenna on both AM & Shortwave bands! There is also a chance the internal components in your plug-in box was zapped by a previous lightning strike years ago. If so, rebuild it, you will hear the difference in reception immediately when you change the switch between local & distant!! Best of luck resolving the problems/ issues in your video!Your Original Philco plug-in longwire antenna matcher definately isn't working correctly at all. I enjoyed your video.

Yes I'll check it. I'm not sure it was ever used. I actually received that coupler in it's original box which itself is in mint condition. Where ever that piece sat, it was a dry area for many years and really appeared unused. But, I do note a fairly big difference in the BCB when switching it on or off, that's the strange thing. Trouble is in that vid you cannot tell because I suffer such terrible noise from a neighbor. That neighbor isn't very cooperative I might add. Maybe I'll explain that out some other time. Anyhow I'll take it apart and check it out along with the values of the components. I have the little diagram you drew up. Saved it to my files Icon_wink

Hello Randal and Brian. I used to have a 42-345. Don't know whatever became of it. The 41-280 has the same chassis as the 41-250 table model, I think, if I'm recalling correctly. Brian, you may not remember but I bought a few Philco XXL type tubes from you in March 2008. In fact, it's the first radio-related purchase I made when I revived my active interest in this hobby.

Hey Brian, glad you still have a few tubes left. As soon as I saw the ad here on the Phorum I recalled my 42-1008 used those type. I have a 42-255 that uses them also. Glad to see you're back, I had wondered where you'd disappeared to.

I come and go depending. The last two years have been heavy with work and still are. Sometimes I don't even have my Sunday's off. Oh well, better than the alternative that's for sure. I'm going to put some effort into getting my long lost projects on the bench and see what damage I can do.

Yes, better than not having enough work for sure. Seems I spend more time doing "damage control" than most anything else. And I also need to address having at an ever growing pile of radios and will have to implement some self discipline doing so.

I've about run out of room for more radios. I guess I never let that bother me before but I think if I buy one more, the family will let the radio stay and I'll have to move out into the garage. Icon_lol I wouldn't want the radios out there over the winter.
